I’ve had friends ask me how I hear God’s voice. My response has been through reading his Word. His God breathed, spirit inspired scriptures, that are alive, active, and living. I’ve also said it’s through being still enough and quiet enough to listen. Also, listening to someone preach and teach the gospels, the truth of God’s great love for you and all people.
But where do we hear God’s voice?
Does place matter?
I like my deck in the morning. Petitioning the Lord with my requests still happen, but I am quite first, in a setting that begs to be still to watch and hear the birds fly and chirp. Trees that show their splendor whose branches full of leaves sway in the breeze. A place that when I’m there settled (with my dog and my coffee) is fresh from the dew, as the sun is coming up, and quiet from any noise or talking. It’s where I can see my own breath and feel myself exhale and warm up with my coffee. I try to be empty to wait, watch, and hear so that I can ultimately hear Jesus speaking his still, small voice to me.
I’ve also…
been in the car with the radio off and heard his voice.
been in the shower with the warm water on my body, and his warming presence on my heart.
I have watched a movie, and had a scene or line transport me, all of a sudden, with a great sense of him touching me right where I’ve been vulnerable to reassure me and love on me.
been on the floor of my room or on my bed with a blanket over my head crying out to him and felt his presence heavier than the blanket on me.
been in services, conferences, and prayer meetings when someone’s prayer over me was God’s direct words of wisdom and encouragement.
been at the beach, hearing the crash of waves or at the lake looking at the calmness of the waters and gently felt wave after wave of his love over me, as he drowned out the many thoughts of my mind.
have been in worship at church and felt my spirit lifted as he inhabits the praises of his people.
listened to worship music while doing my housecleaning or yardwork, for him to stop me in a moment of shear gratitude and holy awe of his great love.
Where doesn’t matter I found, but positioning does.
A lifestyle of positioning your mind, body, and spirit to be always listening, looking, and waiting for Jesus is the invitation he’s looking for to speak to you everywhere in everything you give him.
And that my friends, is where you hear God!
